Dr. Vivek Dogra is a Senior Scientist in CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, Himachal Pradesh in Indian.

He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Photosynthesis and Stress Signaling Group in Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences (CEMPS) at Shanghai Center for Plant Stress Biology (PSC), Shanghai, in China.

He received his doctorate in PhD Plant Biotechnology in CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, India.

He did his masters in MSc Molecular Biology & Biochemistry in Guru Nanak Dev University, India.

His research interest falls on Plant Molecular Biology, Cell Signaling, Functional Genomics & Proteomics

He is currently interested to understand the role of the chloroplast for sensing and managing various environmental/developmental cues and the cognate responses and  trying to unveil the readjustments in the chloroplast homeostasis and to delineate various retrograde signaling cascades initiated from the chloroplast using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and high altitude extremophiles of western Himalayas since the changing climate poses a significant challenge as it presents distress to the growth and development of plants. Therefore, there is a need for plants to develop adaptation strategies. Ample evidence in recent past projected chloroplasts as sensors for environmental cues which priming the plant response to deal with the adversities.

He is a recipient of several awards such as 

  • Ramalingaswami Re-entry fellowship 2019-20 by Department of Biotechnology, GOI, in March 2020.
  • President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) Postdoctoral fellowship by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Dec 2018 for two years; 2019-2020).
  • Dr. D.S. Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship by University Grants Commission (UGC), GOI in June 2015.
  • Qualified CSIR/UGC NET LS in Life sciences twice in June 2006 and Dec 2008. 
  • Qualified Radiological Safety Officer (Level 1) exam at AERB, BARC, INDIA in April 2007.
  • University Gold Medalist in Post-graduation (in 2006).

Second Session: Phytomicrobiome: a Reservoir for Sustainable Agriculture

Dr. Praveen Rahi is currently working as a scientist in National Centre for Microbial Resources at National Centre for Cell Science in Pune in India.

He has obtained his doctorate in PhD Microbiology in CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur in India.

His research interests are to decipher the evolutionary relationship among the legume-rhizobia (particularly crop legumes) and rhizosphere microbiome, and MALDI-TOF MS based microbial identification. He has revealed a biogeographic pattern of distribution of different sub-lineages of pea rhizobia in the different agro-climatic regions of India.

The overall scientific goal of his research is to harness the microbiome of plants to increase farm productivity via increasing nutrient uptake and cycling, and resistance of disease incidence.

He is also interested in the detection of 'objectionable microorganisms', which can either cause illness or degrade the products. Identifying them up to species and sub-species levels, and to know, which places they prefer to proliferate could provide crucial information to develop highly efficient strategies to control microbial infections and contaminations. His research on microbial diversity associated with cellular phones leads to the discovery of three new microbial species. Recently, his group described a new species of Klebsiella isolated from the tomato skin.
